Baobab tree (Adansonia Digitata L.) is an impressive 30m tall tree species, native to the Arabian Peninsula and African continent; introduced later in Australia and India. Arabian legend states that baobab was the first tree to grow on the land. It lives for several thousands of years and remains leafless for up to 9 months in a year. Its leaves are used for medicines and condiments, the bark is used for rope and cloth, and its fruit is eaten. It produces a coconut sized fruit (also called cream of tartar or monkey bread) with a velvety shell that weighs around 1.5 kilograms (3.3 lb). This velvety green, woody shelled whole fruit resembles a slim version of watermelon or an oval gourd.  This baobab fruit-pod has a tart flavour similar to a combination of pear, vanilla and grapefruit.

What is it good for?

The dried, baobab fruit powder contains various nutrients such as riboflavin, carbohydrates, calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium, and phytosterols, with low levels of protein and fats. It contains enzymes, high levels of ascorbic acid (vitamin C), dietary fiber (approximately 50% by weight), and thiamin. National Geographic blog reveals that the pod contains twice as much calcium as milk, six times as much vitamin C as oranges and large amount of iron, vitamins, phosphorous, magnesium, and antioxidants.

According to a team of researchers from Arizona State University, baobab fruit powder provides blood sugar control to support weight loss.

Based on the study published in the November 2013 edition of the journal Nutrition Research, it is revealed that the intake of a white bread with baked baobab extract dramatically decreased the glycemic response to the rapidly- digestible starch from the tested white bread samples. It is found that the baobab fruit extract reduced the glycemic response in the subjects, when consumed at a high-dose (37 g) as well as low-dose (18.5 g) in 250 ml water along with white bread.

It is rich in vitamin C which boosts the bodies fat burning capacity.

How is it used?

The vitamin C rich baobab fruit, with her tart pear-like flavour & creaminess, is very popular in smoothies and drinks, cookies, desserts and ice cream (gelado de mucua). In Zimbabwe, the baobab fruit is used in traditional dishes in the form of fresh fruit or crushed pulp to stir into drinks and porridge. Its white, powdery flesh is used as a sweetener for fruit drinks, a thickener in gravies and jams, or to add a tangy flavour to hot sauces. Its dry pulp aids in fermentation and is added to sugar cane in beer making.
